) Horse Racing Allocations to Seniors Dwindle With Attendance
Ohio horse racing wagering has directly supported the state senior care PASSPORT program for 10 years. But as wagering has fallen at horse race tracks - in part due to competition from other gambling entertainment options in surrounding states - so has the contribution to the state's senior care program providing funding to help older Ohioans retain independence. . ) Racing: Tasmania escapes EI - Cup officials say thanks
The first piece of good EI news came yesterday - the Tasmanian scare is over, the island state remains free of the virus. A sports and leisure horse in Tasmania returned a positive test to EI on Thursday but a second test produced a negative result.
Tasmanian racing went into total lockdown with no training permitted yesterday morning until a third, definitive test was taken, which also proved negative.
It might sound like only a small piece of luck, but the Victorian racing industry will grab it gladly.
The participants in Victoria's billion-dollar Melbourne Cup carnival are on tenterhooks. Theirs is the only eastern seaboard state to stay free of the horrendous EI and they're hoping in remains so, at least until the spring carnival is over. More>>

) Horse racing plan gets a cool reception
MISSOULA, Mont. -- Better not bet on horse racing coming to Missoula next year.County commissioners cast dubious eyes Wednesday on the prospect of a California-based company, or anybody else, running horse races at the Western Montana Fair next year."As always with horse racing issues in Missoula County, the horses are always pushing the cart," commissioner Jean Curtiss said.Larry Anderson broached the subject at a morning administrative meeting, in the wake of an informal proposal by Oneida Capital LLC of Carlsbad, Calif., to either lease or buy the racetrack area at the fairgrounds. No hard-and-fast decisions were made, and more information will be sought by next week. But the commissioners agreed there were too many obstacles to overcome to race horses at the fair in 2008."I think we need to say for 2008 that we're too far along," Curtiss said at the meeting.Anderson and Bill Carey concurred. The Epsom Derby was billed as AUTHORIZED vs the Aidan O'Brien octet, and while Eagle Mountain proved the best of the Ballydoyle eight by finishing second, he was in the end well beaten by Peter Chapple-Hyam's superstar son of Montjeu. Terry Mills' Kid Mambo set a strong pace from the start, and that suited Frankie Dettori and Authorized who settled well in midfield. Eager to avoid any congestion around Tattenham Corner, Dettori steered a wide passage on Authorized, and fully three furlongs out he looked the likely winner. More>>

O'Gara admitted that he has betted on horse racing since he was 18 but dismissed claims he owed a large sum of money as "nonsense".
The 30-year-old has also been hurt by suggestions that his marriage is over, a slur he branded "despicable" as he spoke publicly about the rumours for the first time.
"It was difficult for a day or two after these stories came out," said the Lions fly-half.
"The most important thing is that people who know me realise there is no truth in these stories whatsoever. More>>
